Our Focus

The scientific research goals of Nazca Institute focus on marine environments and their interactions with the human populations directly related to them. We are interested in generating information to assess the actual state and ranges of natural variation of coastal marine ecosystems, habitats, and species, as well as evaluating the long-term effects of conservation efforts in marine protected areas.

Our work involves diverse aspects of Marine Conservation Science, including seafloor mapping, the characterization and study of subtidal and intertidal marine environments, the study of the ecology and interactions of marine species with human activities, and even collection of marine organisms for a deeper understanding and quantification of the marine biodiversity of Ecuador.

Marine Species Ecology Marine Species Ecology
The study of basic ecological aspects of marine species is an integral part of recuperation and maintenance of marine populations that have suffered from human impacts such as overfishing.
Marine Mapping Marine Mapping
A tool for assessing the types of marine seafloor and habitat in coastal areas for zoning marine areas into different types of allowable human activity (e.g., different types of fishing, tourism, no-impact, etc.).
Fisheries Fisheries
Understanding the effects of fishing on marine environments allows Nazca Institute to implement strategies that diminish its impact and improve the quality of life of artisanal fishermen.
Conservation Areas Conservation Areas
Effective conservation and management of marine environments requires a wide focus based on the level of ecosystems. Nazca Institute's goals for conservation areas are based on these principals.
